Lecturer in Graphic Design

£13.69 to £20.73 per hour

We are looking for a specialist lecturer of Graphic Design to teach on the BTEC Level 3 Art and Design Foundation Diploma and National Diploma courses. Ideally you will have relevant industrial experience, a passion for typography/ Information graphics/advertising and up to date understanding of CAD approaches to graphic design.

The post involves managing the process from student enrolment to assessing outcomes of learning and achievement and all associated administration.

The successful applicant will be required to contribute to the teaching of both the specialist pathway and being a Personal Tutor to a group, delivering the Pastoral and Tutorial programme and guiding and advising learners on appropriate career progression.

Some experience of curriculum development would be desirable for this post, as well as experience of delivering the BTEC Edexcel level 3 Foundation/ National Diploma specifications, and assessing the units.

This role requires a high level of professional knowledge and industry experience, along with a relevant degree or professional qualification. Educated to degree Level in an Art and Design related subject, the successful candidate will be required to hold a recognised teaching qualification (or be willing to gain one) and have effective communication skills, both verbal and written and effective IT and administrative skills. They will have experience of working with both 16-19 and 19+ age range and of setting, achieving and reviewing targets for learners.

It is a requirement that all new lecturing staff possess GCSE Maths and English (minimum Grade C) or equivalent or willingness to gain.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:

  • Teaching experience.
  • Degree and or appropriate professional qualification in an Art and Design related discipline.
  • High level of professional knowledge, experience and understanding of Graphic design.
  • A teaching qualification or willingness to obtain one.
  • GCSE Maths and English (minimum Grade C) or equivalent or willingness to gain.
  • Ability to use and teach Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
  • Ability to teach general Art and Design, Graphic Design and Illustration to a range of different cohorts within the department ( level 1 – level 3)
  • Ability to inspire and motivate learners at all levels, both disadvantaged and more able learners in developing appropriate skills and knowledge.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Good administrative skills
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent team working skills.
  • Experience of setting, achieving and reviewing targets for learners.
  • Interest in new technologies as they relate to Graphic Design and Illustration.

Desirable:

  • Experience of supporting students progression to University in Graphic design
  • Personal Tutor experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of the BTEC Edexcel course specifications for the Foundation and National Diploma’s

ACCOUNTABILITIES

The post-holder will be responsible to the Head of the Centre and the Team leader will be accountable for:

  • A Planning, preparing and delivering teaching and learning programmes for learners, e.g., writing schemes of work, topic lists, lesson plans etc
  • B. Managing the learning process and assessing the outcomes of learning and learners’ achievements.
  • C. Providing assistance in course management review and development and the enrichment of the learners’ experience.
  • D. Providing course administration.
  • E. Reflecting upon and evaluating one’s own performance.
  • F. Providing learners with support and pastoral care.

Detailed below for guidance is a suggested list of duties that this accountability covers. This list is not exhaustive and may vary from time to time in order that the accountability may be met. Such variations are a common occurrence and cannot of themselves justify a re-grading of the post.

Accountability A

  1. To assess learners’ needs by identifying and planning for the needs of potential learners and making an initial assessment of learners’ needs.
  2. To plan, prepare and deliver teaching and learning programmes for groups and individuals by identifying the required outcomes of the learning programme and the most appropriate teaching and learning techniques.
  3. To enhance access to and participation in learning programmes.
  4. To develop and use a range of teaching and learning techniques by promoting and encouraging individual learning and by facilitating learning in groups and learning through experience.

Accountability B

  1. To establish and maintain an effective learning environment by planning and structuring learning activities.
  2. To communicate effectively with learners.
  3. To review the learning process with learners, helping them to evaluate and record their progress, including the provision of clear feedback.
  4. To play an active part in the review, evaluation and development of courses provided by the Centre.
  5. To select and develop resources to support learning.
  6. To establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with staff and learners.
  7. To contribute to the College’s quality assurance systems.
  8. To use appropriate assessment methods to ensure learning and achievement whilst promoting equality of opportunity and making use of assessment information to modify programmes as appropriate.

Accountability C

  1. To be involved in subject and course initiatives across the range of work in the Centre and to assist in the development of course materials as necessary.
  2. To interpret curriculum requirements in terms of syllabuses, objectives and schemes of work and select and develop resources to meet learning objectives.
  3. To liaise with employers to secure work experience and educational visits for learners and assist in placing, monitoring and their assessment in the work environment.
  4. To assist in the marketing of courses and the interviewing, advising of the recruitment of learners i.e. attendance at Schools Liaison, publicity and Open Days / evenings.
  5. To assist in other administrative duties as required.
  6. To assist in maintaining Health and Safety Regulations within the College.

Accountability D

  1. To plan future practice based upon self review and evaluation of own practice.
  2. To participate in staff development, continuing professional development and skills updating sessions.
  3. To ensure that professional requirements are met by working within a professional value base and by conforming to agreed codes of professional practice.

Accountability E

  1. To provide learners with support by ensuring learners are suitably inducted and provided with effective learning support.
  2. To ensure learners are given access to guidance opportunities and provided with personal support.
  3. To play an active role in the pastoral care of learners, referring for specialist support as necessary.
  4. To assist with disciplinary matters relating to student conduct, attendance etc.

Exclusivity of Service

Employees must not, without the written consent of the Principal, undertake any employment or engagement which might interfere with the performance of duties at the College or conflict with the interests of the Corporation.

Salary

The salary will be the hourly rate within the range of £13.69 to £20.73 per hour for each hour taught and will be reviewed annually in accordance with Corporation policy. Appointment on the salary scale will depend on relevant experience and qualifications.

The hourly rate is derived from the full time pay scales and is pro rata using a transparent pay formula. Any additional hours required of you, as specified on your Schedule of Engagement, include time for preparation, assessment of learners, marking of exams, course development, office meetings, training and other activities which are incidental to your teaching duties.

I really like typography aswell after writing all of this information I want to produce more experimental typography even if its not based on uni briefs look for competitions and where it can take me.


Maybe setting up a small bussiness or working for a small bussiness for a while to gain experience


Branding and identity as this is something I have enjoyed within the last so many briefs at college I have done

  1. with ref to your teaching quals question; I didnt do mine until I was in mid 40's ,had had a wider ranging career,been teaching for 5 years and was firm in my commitment to part time study.It suited me.
    Things to consider- do you want to continue in education for another year or take time out and return? who is offering PGCE provision? have you got the info about dates/fees/funding? Do you want to go straight into teaching or have a design career 1st?
