End of Module Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
As the brief was based upon different processes I have learnt about what is available and what is realistic within industry. As the brief I set was upon honey I wanted to produce a range of different products covering a few different processes. As I couldn't afford to print the products I tried to interpret the products as mock ups to the best I could with the facilities and stocks available to me. I was happy with the flyers, shirt and testers. But I would of preferred to use sheets of self adhesive stock to mock up the jars as the acetate was stuck to the jar using spray mount which on clear stock gives a mist effect. The other process I could of used which now thinking about it would have been foil blocking for the logo on the packaging and promotional box. The third skill could have been to buy my own stock to print the promotional box with, because the stock which was available to me marks really easy. The reason I used the stock from the printers was because the net for the promotional box was very big which meant I had to use the roll of matt stock. This is something I would of mentioned to the client and is evaluated and noted which stock I would use if it was to be printed. Other than the three listed I think I have explored and learnt from the different processes.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
My brief seems straight forward, how I moved from Bees to Honey however the project was based around alot of reviews from other honey products to try to improve the design based around the reviews and surveys I carried out.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
The layout of Typography and logo were the strongest part of my project. Also I enjoyed trying to use spot colours for the jar designs as the colour of the honey in the jar would act as a second colour. I also wanted to use the spot colour at different opacities to keep the colours limited. Also I like the promotional box and the content, with the clean design the hay also gives it that organic finish, which makes it balanced with legibility and organic farming.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
The main issue with this project was the stock choice. Some like the self adhesive paper is something that maybe I should buy now and keep for future reference as I now know how hard it is to buy as sheets and not rolls. The other stock I wasn't happy with was the stock for the boxes. The surface was really easy to scratch but this is what was available at the time t the printers, I should have looked for stock and took in my own (DP Blog - Card Mock up).

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
- Definitely crack on with the brief straight away because I have never had left the work to be designed to the lat couple of weeks from the hand in.
-Make pages of ideas and concepts before researching next time because I feel that I spent to much time researching rather than designing
- Choose Stock, produce design early and then get the stock choice correct.
- Get out of the idea of producing work based on the computer start exploring different medias and hand drawn approaches.
- Use Dc blog more and use for influence to my work

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
Attendance 1
Punctuality 1
Motivation 3
Commitment 2
Quantity of work produced 2
Quality of work produced 2
Contribution to the group -

5. What are your concerns about industrial experience?

The standard of work they produce compared to mine, don't want to let myself down by showing them a portfolio and it isn't up to standard

Using my time wisely through my second year and holiday break to get as much done as possible for a good and useful understanding for my third year

Don't want to make tea and sit around watching people all day I'd rather being something productive and learning something

Turning up to work where the company is unprepared, want to get the most out of the visit

David Mccandless

I really like typography aswell after writing all of this information I want to produce more experimental typography even if its not based on uni briefs look for competitions and where it can take me.

Maybe setting up a small bussiness or working for a small bussiness for a while to gain experience

Branding and identity as this is something I have enjoyed within the last so many briefs at college I have done

3. What form/format could industrial experience take?

Ask for a look around the studios or printers then ask if their was any chance of a few days work experience

Research what work a certain company produces so I have some knowledge what stuff they are looking for, ask for a look around take a few pieces of work portfolio or maybe cd or bussiness card to direct them to website then ask for a few days of work experience

Keep an eye on companies, or freelancers work I like and watch out for information for events they may attend or host and go along to have a chat with them then send them an email ect after?

Working with certain designers or specific roles within a company for example at a printers?

Ask contacts I already know for any work which is available and needs doing whilst on work experience and ask whoever I'm studying industrial experience with for there opinion.

2. What can I learn from industrial experience?

Identify what environment and career path would suit me, after industrial experience sum up the pro's and con's and summarize so I know what would suit me best

Look for designers work I like and try to find ways of improvement or development so I can offer people something new that have been evolved.

Portfolio advice, what companies look for and also what skills are required for different design paths

Get an idea of what the difference is between the work I am producing at the minute to the standard of industry, maybe this will become clear when I decide what area of design I want to produce

The difference between small companys and big companys within how they both operate and how the smaller company started off and why, what did they offer within the market?

1.What is industrial experience?

Working with direct instructions and realistic briefs taking into account costings of projects.

Be able to fit in a well established team with successful and respected designers to gain knowledge how they have become successful within their career path, starting own business, freelancers ect.

What the environment within a design company consists of, a big design company like Linneys compared to two person team such as 123 klan

Picture above some work from two person team Scien and Mrs Klor, based in Montreal.
123 Klan clients, Adidas, Mini Cooper, Nike and Sony

It would be good to see the initial brief to development work to the final resolution to so how designers within the industry cope with handling briefs do some designers have to pass on certain work to a different designer who has specific knowledge within multimedia work for large businesses and is it the same when a designer is a freelancer? Pass some work on to someone else then finish it off?

How many briefs does one person undertake at a given time, what is the stress like when working within a big design company? Only because all of my tutors back at college who had worked within the industry had all health issues. Finding a balance
